I Love Miami Ink!

Posted on 19 September 2008 by Tony

OK, I have a secret confession to make. I LOVE Miami Ink! Obviously being a huge fan of tattoos, I know it is nothing to be ashamed of but I just can’t get enough of it. I think it is hearing the stories behind the tattoos that makes it so addictive. Then you get to see the finished work, which I think 100% of the time are awesome tattoos.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, let me explain. Miami Ink is a show on the Discovery Channel that follows the work of a tattoo shop in Miami. It is owned by Ami James and Chris Nunez, but they have other artists including Chris Garver, Darren Brass and Yoji the apprentice. Well I say apprentice but he is now being trusted to do his own tattoos. But to be honest, I don’t think I would have him tattoo me as he has made a few mistakes when tattooing and seems always to be really nervous.

Not a good combination of a tattooist!

Miami Ink is owned by Ami and Chris Nunez and they have since opened up a bar in Miami too. The series has been going on for a few years now and the tattoos are just amazing. They had a great art called Kat Von D who was one of the best portrait artists I have ever seen. She has since opened up her own shop in Los Angeles and of course, it is on the Discovery Channel too, called LA Ink.

Ami seems to be a bit volatile on the show and certainly someone you wouldn’t want to upset! He does some really good koi fish tattoos and freehand work is something he specializes in too. He and Chris Nunez have had their run ins over the course of the shows, especially because Chris likes to party a little too much for Ami’s liking. But together they make a good job of running the shop.

I have recently started watching LA Ink too because I like the work of Kat (and there is an artist called Kim who is very cute!). It is the same sort of format, people come in with an idea for a tattoo, talk to the artists who then sketches it up and they come back and get the tattoo. In doing so, they tell a story of why they are getting it done. Some of the reasons are really sad to listen to but you understand how much the tattoos mean and how they will be treasured for years to come.

So I can now rest easy at night knowing I have shared my dirty little reality TV secret!
