Armband Tattoo Designs

Posted on 23 October 2008 by Tony

The history of how the armband tattoo design came to be would bring us back centuries ago to the Polynesian islands.  Back then, the Polynesians used an ancient tattooing method, which involves the use of a shark’s tooth, to pierce the skin to create the design for the tattoo.  They tattooed themselves to distinguish rank and status, using designs that were very admirable that it lasted and is still used as background influence for modern armband tattoo designs today.

Armband tattoo designs are very common and popular choices among tattoo enthusiasts nowadays because of how simple yet powerful they look at first glance.  Tattoos in general have been around for many years back when tribes were still competing for territories and power, using these permanent body markings as signs of how strong, courageous, and brave a warrior is.

Since there are now permanent and temporary tattoos (e.g. henna tattoos) being done, anybody who is interested can get a tattoo for themselves if they wanted to.  Most who are getting their first tattoos would usually go for the armband tattoo designs because of how easy they are, which means less pain and less time spent enduring that pain.  They either are done with a Celtic or tribal background, so it is up to you which one fits your taste the best.

There are other interesting armband tattoo designs that go beyond the traditional tribal and Celtic looks.  Music, art, nature and even calligraphy can be used as themes for the armband tattoo design.  Men and women tattoo enthusiasts go for this type of tattoo because it can be easily seen and it shows people that you’re not a person anybody can just mess with.  Also, this is easily hidden by the sleeves of your shirt so you don’t have to worry about getting caught if tattoos are banned in places you go to.  Another benefit of getting an armband tattoo is that it looks good on the arms of both men and women; the designs for both genders can vary from tribal to nature and it compliments either a muscular bicep or a slender yet toned arm as well.

Armband tattoos carry a lot of influence from the Polynesians that even their traditions and beliefs are still being followed by tattoo artists.  One of these beliefs is that you shouldn’t close the band of the armband tattoo because it will bring bad luck.  Though it sounds more like a superstition, some tattoo artists respect that belief and leave a small gap (usually under the arm).  Most people who get armband tattoos done do not even know that there is a culture behind the lines and designs on their arms, thinking that it is merely just a tattoo to impress and show off.  But little do these people know that because of its Polynesian background, the armband tattoo has become one of the most popular types of tattoos.  They’re bold, they express, and they compliment or enhance the arms of men and women alike.
